About this grant

The NLnet Foundation is a Dutch foundation that gives grants of €5,000 to €50,000 to open-source and standards projects that make the internet freer and safer; the amount can increase if the project proves its potential. Besides money, depending on the fund, it offers security audits, mentoring and legal advice on licences. Anyone or any organisation can apply and the application is short.

Mostly technical developments are accepted: code, hardware and content must be released under open licences and, for EU-supported funds, a “European dimension” is needed. Projects and applications generated by AI are not accepted. Deadlines come every odd month (on the 3rd); the nearest is 3 November 2026 at 12:00 CET.

Steps

  1. 1

Check that your project is technical and open: code, hardware and content must be released under open licences and preferably on open standards.

  2. 2

Open the “Funding” page and choose the fund or theme that fits your project; check the chosen fund's eligibility section. EU-supported funds require a strong European dimension.

  3. 3

Write the application briefly, in your own words, in plain text and in English: AI-generated texts and projects are not accepted.

  4. 4

Fill in the form at nlnet.nl/propose before the next deadline: the 3rd of every odd month at 12:00 CET (the next is 3 November 2026).

  5. 5

What exactly to submit

  • A description of the technical work and the open licence
  • For EU-supported funds, a case for the European dimension

Example

Example (written by us): Ana writes an open library for reading grants' official pages. She picks the right fund, describes the goal, a month-by-month plan and the budget in English in an hour and submits before 3 November.

An example we wrote to illustrate: it is not an official sample, replace the details with your own.

How applicants are chosen

The foundation judges technical contribution and fit with the theme; it pays on a cost-recovery basis, not at commercial rates. Any person or organisation can apply.

What happens after you apply

Grants of €5,000 to €50,000, scalable; besides money, security audits, mentoring and licensing advice (depending on the fund). The next deadline is 3 November 2026, 12:00 CET.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a long, vague application: they ask for short and to the point
  • Choosing the wrong fund and not reading its eligibility
  • Releasing results under a closed licence
  • Using AI to write the application or project: the foundation does not consider such submissions

Tips

  • We haven't re-checked the conditions by hand yet: compare amounts and deadlines with the official page before applying.
