About this grant

The Botín Foundation helps young people from Cantabria study at university. According to the call, there are 28 scholarships for Cantabrian universities (€1,500 each) and 19 for other Spanish universities (€5,000 each); a scholarship lasts 9 months and is renewed every year if the conditions are met. The result is announced in September.

You must live in Cantabria and selection is by academic record: applicants with the highest marks win. The minimum marks only qualify you for assessment: 9 on entry and, for students, 9 in humanities and social-legal fields, 8.5 in health sciences and sciences and 7.5 in engineering. The terms PDF could not be read automatically, so check the amount and 2027-28 deadline on the foundation's website: the dates in the record are indicative (end of June).

Steps

  1. 1

Check the conditions: you were born in Cantabria (or lived there the three years before applying), are 25 or younger, hold no degree and receive no other grant for the same purpose.

  2. 2

Work out your entry mark: 60 % Bachillerato mark and 40 % general PAU phase; you need at least 9.

  3. 3

Open the call at fundacionbotin.org/becas-convocatorias and read the Bases (in 2026, the 54th call; it opened in April).

  4. 4

Prepare the documents and upload them online in the format the instructions give.

  5. 5

Apply before 31 July (the 2026 deadline) and wait for the decision in September.

  6. 6

If awarded, renew it every year with a new application before 31 July with your grades.

What exactly to submit

Documents and materials to attach to the application.

  • Bachillerato grades certificate and PAU result (for new students)
  • Proof that you were born in Cantabria or have lived there three years running
  • Proof of enrolment in the studies
  • To renew: last year's grades certificate (at least 90 % of credits passed)
  • The foundation may ask for the originals

Example

Calculation example (written by us): Bachillerato 9.4 and general PAU phase 9.0. Result = 0.6 × 9.4 + 0.4 × 9.0 = 9.24 ≥ 9, so the application can be assessed. They study in Madrid, so they compete for €5,000 rather than €1,500.

An example we wrote to illustrate: it is not an official sample, replace the details with your own.

How applicants are chosen

Awards go to applicants with the highest grades. The minimums only let you be assessed: 9 on entry and, once at university, 9 in Arts, Humanities and Social and Legal Sciences, 8.5 in Sciences and Health Sciences and 7.5 in Engineering and Architecture.

What happens after you apply

The award is announced in September. There are 28 scholarships for universities in Cantabria (€1,500) and 19 for other Spanish universities (€5,000); they last 9 months and renew yearly.

Common mistakes

  • Falling short of 9 on the 60 % Bachillerato + 40 % PAU formula: the application is not even assessed
  • Not providing the required documents: such files are not accepted
  • Applying after 31 July

Tips

  • We haven't re-checked the conditions by hand yet: compare amounts and deadlines with the official page before applying.
